Each boat would fly a different downwind rig and sail in the same wind on the same day to settle the issue. The criteria used to select the best downwind rig were speed, comfort and hassle. The plan was to check wind direction on the day and set a distant waypoint dead downwind. The boats would start in a line, and the distance to waypoint was.   The book, as well as the film, says Lumenick, “buys heavily into the idea that the civil war was a noble lost cause and casts Yankees and Yankee sympathisers as the villains”.

Getting half way through a run and then turning around and running into the wind makes me cranky and my sweat feel icy if it is cold out. Relax your pace goals. Running into a 10 mph headwind can slow your pace by about 8%, with it .   Another bit of jargon is to talk about wind value. A direct cross-wind, for example from 9 or 3 o’clock, is called a full-value wind. That’s because the wind is affecting the entire side of the bullet as it travels down range. A 12 or 6 o’clock wind is a zero-value wind. The point of the bullet or its base has a small cross-section.

Phew. All of that pretty much covers the differences between the book and the movie. I still would choose the book over the movie, but the latter is very good and well worth watching if you’ve somehow missed it. Thanks to IMDB, AMC Filmsite, and a post by Andrea Rowe on Yahoo! Voices for helping to remind me of the many differences. When you seem to be making the right decisions based on the moment but all the results are running 'down wind' from other people spoiling the outcome. An animal in the forest wants to be 'downwind' of its hunter so the hunter doesn't get a sniff of the prey. All upwind are 'seen' by those downwind as the wind blows away from them.
