It would be hard to overstate how much I enjoyed this book. The Hooblers tell the story of John Smith masterfully, with a great eye for detail and with a sense of historical balance and perspective. For anyone interested in either Captain John Smith or the Jamestown colony, I cannot recommend this book /5. In The True Travels Smith recalls his adventures as a soldier in Eastern Europe and his amazing escape from Turkish slavery. Advertisements for the Unexperienced Planters, his last book, is a critical examination of the successes and failures of the English colonial enterprise. Written in a consistently lively style, Smith’s works are filled.

The True Travels, Adventures and Observations of Captain John Smith V1 book. Read reviews from world’s largest community for readers. This scarce antiqua /5(2). Smith earned his status as an American hero through his strong work ethic and compromise with the native Americans, themes that reappear in his writings such as The Generall Historie of Virginia and The True Travels of Captain John Smith. Most of the critical scepticism of Smith's credibility is a result of the differences between his narratives.

The following is an excerpt from Captain John Smith's Generall Historie of Virginia, Book III, "The Proceedings and Accidents of the English Colony in Virginia."Although called a "history," Smith published most of what appears in Book III in , only shortly after the events he describes took place.   Travels and Works of Captain John Smith, President of Virginia and Admiral of New England by John Smith, June , Burt Franklin edition, HardcoverWritten: Jun,
